OCR
Optical character recognition: turning a scanned image of a page into text.
Scanned worksheets are pictures. OCR turns the picture into text a computer can work with. Quality depends on the scan: straight, well lit, 300 dpi scans convert almost perfectly; phone photos at an angle don't. Maths needs a specialist step so that fractions, exponents and symbols come through as maths rather than as a string of characters.
